August 2010
Well, we are now more than half way through the Winter and what a wet one it has been this year, very puggy underfoot. Thankfully we have been able to keep up with the pruning and mowing on the occasional fine days so the garden is not looking too bad heading towards Spring, always nice to see the days lengthening out.
This year has been an interesting one in the book trade, the economic situation has resulted in smaller print runs being done which means books go out of print quickly and are not always available when we re-order, so keeping on top of stock can be very challenging. Compounding the situation is the move to supply books from Australian based suppliers which adds days to the delivery, Macmillan is the latest to announce they will be moving to supplying from Australia in the new year.
Still, life would be boring without the occasional challenge.
Another change this year is the move to NZ Post sponsoring what used to be the Montana Book Awards. Categories have been reduced down to four, Fiction, Poetry, General Non-fiction and Illustrated Non-fiction. The short list has been announced, books we have enjoyed that have made the short list are ‘As the Earth turns Silver’ by Alison Wong and ‘Limestone’ by Fiona Farrell (Fiction), ‘Just This’ by Brian Turner (Poetry), ‘Encircled Lands: Te Urewera 1820-1921’ by Judith Binney (General Non-fiction), Art at Te Papa edited by William McAloon, ‘Go Fish’ by Al Brown and ‘Marti Friedlander’ by Leonard Bell (Illustrated Non-fiction).
The top selling books in NZ this month still include the Stieg Larsson series, helped no doubt by the movie versions, ‘The Wonky Donkey’ by Craig Smith (prize winning children’s book with CD), ‘The Passage’ by Justin Cronin and ‘A Life on Gorge River’, all of which we have in stock.
Books we have read and enjoyed in the past few months have been ‘The Glass Room’ by Simon Mawer, ‘Trespass’ by Rose Tremain, ‘Breaking of Eggs’ by Jim Powell and ‘Room’ by Emma Donoghue (both currently out of print).
We are taking a week off early September to go and visit our son in Australia, while we are away Jacquie will be looking after the shop for us, please be gentle with her!
Good reading. Regards, Pam & Brett
