Finalist in the General Non-Fiction category.

During the nineteenth century the Urewera was a remote but enticing wilderness except for the Maori who lived there, for them it was a sheltering homeland. In 1866-67 large areas were taken by confiscation or forced cession. At the end of the fighting in 1872 the Urewera became an autonomous district, governed by its own leaders. In 1921-22 the Urewera Native Reserve was abolished in law. This book provides the historical context for Tuhoe's quest for the restoration of their 'nationhood'.

Paperback
Author: Gareth Morgan & Geoff Simmons with John McCrystal
Published by: Public Interest Publishing (NZ)
In Stock: 2
New Zealand’s health system is a political football, held together only by the high quality of our nurses and doctors, according to a new book from Gareth Morgan.
While the local health system scrubs up surprisingly well globally, Dr Morgan finds a substantial mismatch between the public’s expectations and what the health system actually delivers. Morgan and Simmons go behind the scenes of the New Zealand public health system and bring clarity to the issues that need to be addressed if crisis is to be avoided.
The book explores the consequences of ongoing avoidance of the tough calls on rationing and prioritisation. It considers how many New Zealanders are already suffering or missing out from health care because of ad-hoc interventions in response to pressure groups.

Over a span of almost 20 years from the mid 1960s to the mid 1980's, a diverse group of very focussed New Zealanders looked skywards and from nothing created and built a well respected North Island airline called Air Central. The story reveals how the airline battled a chronic shortage of finance, rampant inflation, restrictive licensing regulations and a reluctance of the public to fly in a small aircraft yet grew to pioneer fast, frequent and reliable air links between provincial cities.

Author: Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand (Jock Phillips, general editor)
Published by: David Bateman Ltd

As the last sizeable landmass to be settled by people the history of New Zealand is a story of migration; from the first Polynesian explorers to this year's new settlers. This fascinating book comes out of the online Encyclopedia of New Zealand project and describes the incredible variety of the peoples who settled in New Zealand from the 19th century onwards. The introductory chapters explore the themes of migration - how and why people travelled around the world to settle in a country often far removed geographically and culturally from their homelands. Following these chapters, each ethnic group is described covering how and why they came to New Zealand and what issues they faced then and now.

Houses. . . homes. . .the house as a physical structure, or the home as a place of emotional intimacy? Or is it the home as an institution? At Home in New Zealand is a vigorous exploration of the idea of 'home' throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Architects discuss housing styles - the place of the Gothic in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, modern housing in the twentieth century, women's role in relation to modernization. Historians assess the famous state housing scheme of the 1930s and 1940s, the place of domestic servants ('the stranger at the hearth'), and the controversy over Maori housing set off by Washday at the Pa. Garden design from an anthropological perspective and 'a home in this world' as a literary concept - or the 'home' as a welfare institution for the deserving poor.

All these uncover new dimensions in the meaning of that central word 'home' and the issues that notion ... more

Beyond The Scene : Landscape and Identity in Aotearoa New Zealand order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 45.00 each
Paperback
Author: Janet Stephenson , Mick Abbott & Jacinta Ruru (Editors)
Published by: University of Otago Press
In Stock: 1
If a nation could be said to have a dominant passion, New Zealand's would be its landscapes. Images of spectacular natural features pervade the media - between the pages of glossy coffee-table books, in tourism promotions and on screen as the setting for blockbuster movies - but are these scenes that define its people? For Beyond the Scene the editors asked eleven writers to choose a landscape that was important to them and to write it from the perspective of their life experience and knowledge. From farmer to art historian and film critic, geographer and planner to lawyer, from landscape architect to poet and environmentalist - these are diverse voices. Each discusses a very different landscape: from suburban Auckland and rural Waikato to a planned town in Canterbury and much-filmed Otago. Together, they investigate the relationship landscape has to identity, community and psyche.
