Paperback
Author: Paul Diamond
Published by: Random House New Zealand Ltd
In Stock: 2
This is a biography of one of New Zealand's first international media celebrities, Makereti (1873-1930). The daughter of a Maori mother and a Pakeha father, Makereti was brought up by her Maori extended family until she was sent to boarding school. She became well-known (as Guide Maggie or Maggie Papakura) throughout New Zealand and overseas as a guide at Whakarewarewa, particularly after the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901. She led visits of Maori concert parties (complete with carved villages and waka) to Australia and England, but dropped out of the public view after marrying for a second time in 1912 and moving to Oxfordshire. Following her divorce in 1924, Makereti enrolled as a student at the University of Oxford and died just before her thesis about traditional Maori life was due to be examined. While her remarkable story has intrigued many people, it is not well recorded. This book - a pictorial ... more

NZ$ 20.00 each
Paperback
Author: Queenie Rikihana Hyland (illus Sarah Wairau)
Published by: Reed Publishing (NZ) Ltd
In Stock: 2
Manawa Hine – literally ‘Female Heart’ – retells the stories of four famed Maori heroines, each of whom swam against the tide in their own way. Kahe te Rau o te Rangi swam from Kapiti Island to the mainland with her baby on her back and in doing so saved many lives. Hinepoupou was abandoned by her abusive husband on Kapiti Island but swam home to D’Urville Island. Huria Matenga was just 22 when she swam out in raging seas to a sinking brig and saved the lives of nine men onboard. Pania of Hukarere was a young woman of the sea who found love after years of abuse from her elderly husband but in the end could not resist the call of her beloved mother and returned to join her in the sea.

Lovingly told, with striking line drawings by young artist Sarah Wairau, these are stories that will inspire, entertain and remain with the reader.

Exploring Maori Values order quantity

NZ$ 40.00 each
Paperback
Author: John Patterson
Published by: Dunmore Publishing Limited
In Stock: 1
This book, first published in 1992, offers Pakeha New Zealanders an insight into Maori thought and values and the basis for the sort of understanding and partnership that should exist between Pakeha and Maori. It also presents a new perspective from which long-held Pakeha values can be reassessed.
John Patterson attempts, as an investigative philosopher, to come to grips with personal, embedded limitations that inform any look into one world-view from the perspective of another. He demonstrates a high degree of empathy with and respect for Maori and the book offers a practical model for engagement with this culture and for greater mutual understanding.

Every kete has a story. This collection is drawn from the rich store of information and memories associated with kete - these much loved but often overlooked 'baskets of knowledge'. Some stories are short, others grow with the telling. All are told with warmth, humour and humility, giving us insight into how the humble kete so often helps to establish ongoing friendships and relationships. Some stories are told by the kete makers. Others are related by people whose kete have been passed on to them by family members, friends, noted weavers, or even strangers. These kete have come to be treasured by their owners as taonga imbued with the memories they carry.
